As I was unable to join the interview, I felt at a loss for what to do. Eventually, I grabbed my phone and decided to update Murray and the others over the media frenzy that Webber had started.

I didn’t know if any of them would be able to do anything about it—there wasn’t much you could do once things were released on the internet—but at least they’d know.

Murray—unsurprisingly—answered my call within seconds. “Glover, how are ye gett’n on?”

“Not well, sir,” I answered sincerely. “I went to join an interview with the guy who reported Sinead Reed missing, but the moment he heard my name he wanted me removed from the room.”

“What!?” Murray roared. “One moment, Glover.”

I waited only a second before Murray continued.

“Sorry, I was just calling the others tae come closer. I’m putting ye on speaker phone. Repeat what ye just said tae me.”

I did, and I quickly heard the sound of shocked gasps from the team.

“How could something like that even happen?” Fenton asked in shock.

“Is it tae dae with the articles, sir?” Gamble inquired.

I heard the sound of Murray’s rushed, unhappy whispers to Gamble before he raised his voice enough so I could hear it. “Sorry, Glover. This is the first I’m hearing aboot this.”

“Sorry, sirs,” Gamble replied guiltily. “I’d only just started looking, but Emily just messaged me. She just noticed all of the articles on the social media platforms.” Gamble paused. “I’ve barely looked at them, but the couple I’ve seen amn’t looking good.”

“No, they aren’t,” I replied bitterly. “Webber has clearly worked overtime to get more out there. His more subtle approach is definitely a thing of the past... now he’s really laying into me.”

“Gamble, get back tae yer desk and see what ye can find right away,” Murray said.

“Aye, sir,” Gamble answered.

I heard the sound of Gamble’s footsteps as Murray spoke. “If these articles werena gett’n much interest before… I dinnae understand what’s changed?”

“I spoke with Effie from Inverness’ tech lot,” I replied. “From what she’s seen, she’s pretty certain that Webber must have sent these articles directly to different journalists. They’re the ones who made things more widespread.”

Murray swore profusely for a couple of seconds. “This isnae good, Glover... He’s trying tae attack yer credibility in order tae protect his own arse.”

“Aye, but he widnae be trying so hard unless he felt a bit trapped,” Boyd responded hopefully.

“But how wid he ken how close we are?” Fenton asked nervously. “Dae ye think he’s been watching us?”

I felt my blood run cold at the thought.

Fenton was right. He must have known how close we were to finding out the truth for him to have reacted so strongly... and the only way he could know we were on to him was if he was watching us.

“Bloody creepy bastard,” Murray muttered. “I dinnae ken where he is, but he must be watching at least one of us tae ken! And ma money wid be on him watching ye, Glover.” He paused. “Have ye not noticed yersel being followed?”

“No, sir,” I responded.
